Peace Prize

The SPU Peace Prize represents the highest distinction awarded by the Summer Peace University (SPU). It embodies the very spirit of the institution — the belief that peace is not merely an aspiration, but a discipline, a responsibility, and a shared human practice. The award is conferred during the Closing Ceremony in Belvedere Marittimo, in conjunction with the public reading of the Declaration of Belvedere, which summarizes the collective reflections, analyses, and commitments matured during the four weeks of the program.

The Peace Prize honors individuals, institutions, or communities that have demonstrated an extraordinary and tangible contribution to the promotion of peace, sustainability, social justice, intercultural dialogue, or human dignity. Recipients are selected for their proven dedication to fostering reconciliation, building bridges between cultures, and addressing global challenges through creativity, cooperation, and moral courage.

The Prize carries no financial reward; its value lies in its ethical and symbolic dimension. It is designed to highlight those who have acted as authentic leaders of peace — people who inspire by example, who turn knowledge into service, and who embody the same values that the SPU seeks to transmit through its educational mission.

Each year, the ceremony takes place in the historic heart of Belvedere Marittimo, which becomes, for one evening, a symbolic stage of global recognition. Students, professors, ambassadors, and citizens gather in the central square of the village to celebrate the laureates in an atmosphere that merges academia, diplomacy, and civic participation. This public moment of recognition serves as a bridge between the academic world and society, reminding all participants that peace must be lived and renewed in daily life.

The SPU Peace Prize is also conceptually linked to two other pillars of the Summer Peace University: the SPU White Paper, which collects the analyses and proposals developed during the Peace Labs and Forums, and the Declaration of Belvedere, which formalizes the intellectual and moral synthesis of each edition. Together, they form a triad — thought, action, and recognition — expressing the full educational and civic meaning of the SPU.

Through this award, the Summer Peace University seeks to reaffirm its conviction that education must be transformative. The recognition of those who have devoted their lives to dialogue, justice, and sustainability becomes itself an educational act: a lesson in humility, vision, and perseverance offered to future generations of peace leaders.
The recipients of the SPU Peace Prize are not chosen for prestige or position, but for their integrity, coherence, and long-term impact. They may be diplomats who have negotiated reconciliation processes, researchers who have advanced the ethics of sustainability, activists who have defended human rights, or communities that have transformed conflict into coexistence. In all cases, the Prize celebrates the same essence: the courage to act with humanity when the world is divided by fear or indifference.

The SPU Peace Prize thus serves a double purpose. On one hand, it recognizes and honors those who have embodied the values of peace in their actions; on the other, it offers to the students and participants of the SPU a living testimony — a human model of ethical leadership. In doing so, it transforms the closing of the academic program into a beginning: the continuation of a collective commitment that transcends borders, generations, and cultures.
In this sense, the Prize is not the end of a journey, but the opening of a dialogue between those who study peace and those who live it. It stands as a reminder that true leadership is measured not by power, but by service; not by possession, but by contribution; not by victory, but by understanding.

By awarding the SPU Peace Prize, the Summer Peace University reaffirms its mission: to cultivate a new generation of global citizens capable of uniting intellect and compassion, knowledge and responsibility — and to celebrate those who, through their life and work, illuminate the path toward a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world.
