For decades, religion has played a dual role in global affairs: it has been a source of identity, community, and meaning, but also, at times, a dividing line that fuels conflict. In many regions of the world, disputes framed along religious lines have escalated into violence, undermining social cohesion and political stability. Yet, growing evidence demonstrates that interreligious dialogue, when pursued sincerely and inclusively, can serve as a powerful mechanism for preventing conflict and fostering peace. Such dialogue creates opportunities to challenge prejudice, build mutual trust, and recognize the shared values that underpin diverse traditions.
The urgency of dialogue becomes even more apparent in a global environment marked by migration, economic uncertainty, and rising nationalism. In these contexts, misunderstandings and stereotypes can deepen divides, leaving communities vulnerable to manipulation by political or extremist actors. By cultivating inclusive spaces for interfaith engagement, societies can resist polarization and reaffirm pluralism as a source of strength. Conflict prevention in this sense is not only about reducing violence, but also about creating conditions in which individuals and communities can coexist in dignity and mutual respect.
A crucial aspect of this process lies in the role of the new generation. Young people today are increasingly interconnected across borders and cultures, making them uniquely positioned to transcend inherited divisions. Through education, digital platforms, and grassroots initiatives, they can spearhead genuine interreligious dialogue that addresses contemporary challenges with creativity and openness.
These questions will be explored during the Interreligious Dialogue and Conflict Prevention, at the Summer Peace University 2025. By equipping the new generation with tools of empathy, critical thinking, and intercultural understanding, the program aspires to demonstrate that they can indeed be catalysts of transformative change toward a more peaceful, pluralistic future.
